The TC1 & TMI1 Combined Skill Set is a nationally recognised training qualifications required for individuals seeking employment within the traffic management industry.

This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to safely control traffic, implement approved Traffic Management Plans, position and operate traffic control devices and communicate effectively with road users and work teams.

Successful completion of this program is the first step towards a career in traffic management and is suitable for those wishing to work with traffic management companies, civil construction, utilities, local government and road maintenance organisations.

The course aligns with the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management and State Road Authority requirements.

Course Delivery

This course includes 4 days at Foresite Training plus 20+ hours of unpaid practical placement.
The delivery mode for this course is face-to-face (classroom based) plus practical placement.

Theory and practical activities

Post-Course Practical Requirements

To satisfy Austroads and State Road Authority requirements, participants must complete workplace practical activities following the classroom component.

Traffic Controller (TC1)

Participants must complete:

  • Minimum 20 hours of supervised practical experience on Category 1 roads
  • Completion of workplace logbook
  • Final practical assessment

Traffic Management Implementer (TMI1)

Participants must complete:

  • Three different Traffic Management set-ups in live traffic environments
  • Set-ups must reflect approved Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes
  • Final workplace assessment

All post-course practical requirements must be completed within six months of finishing the classroom training.

Day Four: Final assessment includes:

  • Written knowledge assessment
  • Simulated workplace activities
  • Workplace logbook & practical evidence
  • Final practical competency assessment

Participants must satisfactorily complete all assessment requirements to achieve competency.

Where required, Foresite Training can assist participants to arrange suitable workplace practical opportunities.

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

  • Complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) evaluation prior to enrolment and demonstrate suitable LLN skills, including the ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English. If you have any concerns regarding this requirement, please contact us immediately to arrange a face-to-face pre-training interview.
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold and present a physical WhiteCard issued by WorkSafe Victoria.
  • Hold and present a Statement of Attainment or verifiable USI transcript for CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (or equivalent).
  • Supply and wear all required PPE as listed below:
    PPE Requirements

Participants are required to supply or purchase their own PPE which must be worn from Day 2 onwards, including for all practical placement days:

  • Steel-capped safety boots (lace-up with zip)
  • High-visibility, long-sleeve orange shirt with 2 bio-motion tape strips
  • Cotton drill long work pants with 2 bio-motion tape strips
  • Hard hat with sun brim and chin strap
  • Safety glasses
  • Safety gloves
All required PPE must be supplied and worn as specified. Participants who do not have the required PPE will be unable to participate in practical training, assessments or workplace placement.
Traffic Management PPE Requirements

  • Be physically capable of performing traffic control duties, including walking, bending and lifting heavy signs and equipment.
  • Be willing and able to participate in all practical components of the course and work placement.
  • Be willing and able to attend practical work placement for no remuneration at any location within 50 kms from metropolitan Melbourne

Outcome

Upon successful completion of all classroom, work placement and assessment requirements, participants will receive Statements of Attainment for:

Participants will also receive a digital card issued by Austroads.

Career Opportunities

Completion of this course provides the skills required to work as a:

  • Traffic Controller
  • Traffic Management Implementer

It also provides the foundation for progression into higher-level traffic management qualifications.

Fees and Charges

Course Fee: $1290

Course fee includes the provision 3 days of training, coordination of one workplacement and 1 final assessment day.

Foresite Training will coordinate one workplacement with an appropriate traffic management provider for each student. If students do not attend the scheduled workplacement or any days within this placement they will be required to organise their own placement within the allowed timeframe.

Workplacement, the provision of sufficient evidence and the completion of final assessment must be completed within 6 months of the commencement of the course.  This time frame is an Austroads requirement and is not negotiable. Failure to complete within this timeframe will result in withdrawal from the training program.

Failure to attend any training, placement or assessment days will result in forfeiture of course fees and full fees applicable for rescheduling.

PPE is not included in course fees. Students must provide and wear their PPE for both training, workplacement and assessment. Failure to attend in appropriate PPE will result in students being sent home and rescheduling required at full cost.
